"The Clubmakers Corner"
Swing speed, how it affects shaft flex selection: First of all there's no right or wrong swing speed and you have to work with what you have. In other words, were all kind of stuck with the swing speed we were born with. Usually if we try to increase our swing speed our timing gets all out of whack and we end up with an errant shot. When we decide to buy a new club or clubs we usually have something in mind suggested by what the PGA stars are using, or a well meaning golfing buddy recommends, or an add in a magazine or on TV or the Demo Day "best club I ever hit in my life". Very seldom do any of us get our swing speed checked and buy the flex that will give us the most "bang for our buck". All of the club manufacturers offer a selection of shaft flex's i.e.: L-Ladies, A- Senior, R -Regular, S-Stiff and XS-Extra stiff. These shafts are made to the manufacturers specifications and are pretty much tied to the golfers swing speed as shown in the chart below. It is suggested that you play the most flexible shaft you can control for the most solid feel.
The shaft flex rating shown in the chart are a guideline only and can vary by shaft manufacturer. |
